Actual Construction |
|
Once drawn, a design is plotted on graph paper, each square representing an individual knot. A foundation of cotton string called Warps (vertical threads) are tied to the top and bottom of the loom. Each knot is individually tied around the warp and held into place by horizontal threads called wefts. Wefts are vertical strings of cotton that are interwoven between each row of knots and hammered down. It is the row of knots that determine the pattern and provide the pile of the rug. Washing, clipping, color sorting, and stretching are a few of the finishing stages. |
